430 Billion Won Invested in Yuseong Dungok District for 43,000㎥ Facility... Completion by 2025
Over 300 Jobs to Be Created by 2028... Expected Momentum for Daejeon Bioindustry Innovation
Global company Merck of Germany is entering the Dungok District in Yuseong, Daejeon.
According to Daejeon City on the 21st, Merck decided at its board meeting last February to invest 300 million euros (approximately 430 billion KRW) to build a new bioprocessing production center in Daejeon.
The Asia-Pacific Bioprocessing Production Center will be located in the Dungok District of Yuseong-gu within the International Science Business Belt, covering an area of 43,000 ㎥ (about 13,000 pyeong). Construction will begin at the end of May, with completion scheduled for 2025 and operations starting in 2026.
The production center will supply essential products and solutions for biopharmaceutical development and production, including Merck's dry powder cell culture media, process liquids, small-scale manufacturing under Pre-GMP standards, and sterile sampling systems.
Through this, it will support process development, clinical development, and production of biopharmaceuticals for pharmaceutical bio companies and biotech firms across the Asia-Pacific region.
The city expects this investment to create about 300 new jobs by 2028.
Mayor Lee Jang-woo said, "Going forward, we will build a value chain where surrounding companies grow together by adding research functions beyond a bio production base in partnership with Merck, a global leader in science and technology." He added, "Through this, Daejeon will become a world-class bio hub surpassing Boston."
Meanwhile, Merck operates in healthcare, life sciences, and electronic technologies, employing over 63,000 people worldwide. Last year, its sales reached 21 billion euros (approximately 30.2 trillion KRW) across 65 countries.
