The Yeongyang County Health Center in Gyeongbuk will conduct medical examinations for individuals with a history of Hansen's disease and Yeongyang residents for skin health at the Chronic Disease Counseling Room of the Health Center from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM on the 21st.
Hansen's disease is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, characterized by skin rashes. If the bacteria invade the nose or eyes, it can cause nasal congestion, bleeding, and iritis. If left untreated, there is a risk of neurological complications, making consistent management essential.
This examination, conducted by the Daegu-Gyeongbuk branch of the Korea Hansen Welfare Association, will be free of charge for 30 residents (first-come, first-served), including those with a history of Hansen's disease, and will also cover skin conditions such as hives, itching, athlete's foot, and eczema.
Jang Yeo-jin, the director of the Health Center, stated, "Although Hansen's disease is currently rare, it continues to occur, so efforts must be made for prevention and management." She added, "As agricultural activities, which expose people to ultraviolet rays, are starting in earnest, we ask residents to pay attention to skin health."
