60,000 Defects Found in Preliminary Inspection Report

The Democratic Party Daegu City Branch urged Daegu City on the 20th to come up with measures, stating, "Residents of Hillstate Daegu Station Opera are suffering greatly due to sloppy and substandard construction."

In a statement released that day, the Democratic Party Daegu City Branch claimed, "According to media reports, on the 16th, about 300 prospective residents of 'Hillstate Daegu Station Opera' in Buk-gu, Daegu, held a rally at the apartment construction site over sloppy and substandard construction. This is because traces of sloppy and substandard construction were found, such as missing stair railings, broken tiles, window frame leaks and incomplete installation, and the use of finishing materials different from those in the model house in the 1,207-unit apartment scheduled for move-in at the end of this month."

The Democratic Party Daegu City Branch reported, "Since January this year, more than 1,000 defect-related complaints have been filed with Buk-gu Office in Daegu, and a preliminary inspection conducted last month found a total of 66,411 defects. This means there were about 55 defects per household."

The Democratic Party Daegu City Branch stated, "At this level, collapse is not surprising. The causes of sloppy and substandard construction in these newly built apartments are multiple problems overlapping, such as the abuse of the pre-sale system, excessive shortening of construction periods, and lack of on-site management systems. Furthermore, the structure of the district office’s completion approval process, which passes as long as there are no structural problems rather than finishing internal work, also plays a role."

The statement continued, "Currently, newly built apartments throughout Daegu are undergoing preliminary inspections without completing internal work. Despite continuous accidents caused by sloppy and substandard construction, such as the Gwangju apartment collapse in January 2022 and the Incheon newly built apartment parking lot collapse in April last year, the problem is that construction companies do not care at all. Therefore, citizens’ mockery with nicknames like ‘Tongppyeo Castle,’ ‘Sunsal Xi,’ ‘Water Heureujio,’ and ‘D-Park’ should be seriously considered."

The Democratic Party Daegu City Branch urged, "Daegu City and Buk-gu Office must clearly understand the situation regarding this incident and ensure that citizens do not suffer damages. Taking this opportunity, we hope they cooperate with the nine districts and counties to prepare countermeasures for internal work in newly built apartments and present citizens with ‘safe homes’ that protect their lives from the chain of substandard construction."
