Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, a leading company in artificial intelligence (AI) chips, announced on the 19th (local time) that they are testing Samsung Electronics' High Bandwidth Memory (HBM). He projected the emergence of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which surpasses human intelligence, within five years.
On the second day of Nvidia's 'Annual Developer Conference (GTC 2024),' Huang held a press conference with global media at the Signia by Hilton Hotel in San Jose, California, where he made these remarks.
When asked if Nvidia is using Samsung's HBM, Huang replied, "We are not using it yet," but added, "We are currently qualifying it and have high expectations." HBM is a product that vertically stacks multiple DRAM chips to significantly increase data processing speed. Earlier, SK Hynix announced that it would be the first memory manufacturer to supply the fifth-generation HBM3E DRAM to Nvidia. Huang praised both Samsung and SK Hynix, saying, "HBM is a very complex and challenging technology, almost a technological miracle," acknowledging the companies building such technology.
Regarding the risks in the Chinese market due to US-China relations, he said, "There are two things we must do immediately: one is to understand and comply with policies, and the other is to increase supply chain resilience." Huang acknowledged that it is inevitable to use a significant amount of Chinese-made components, noting that this applies not only to semiconductors but also to "automobiles, defense industries, and others." He added, "The global supply chain is quite complex," and expressed confidence that the US government's goals are not hostile, predicting that US-China relations will not escalate to extremes.
Huang reiterated his previous statement that AI has bridged the technological gap and that AGI is expected to emerge within five years. However, he noted that the exact timing depends on how AGI is defined, explaining, "If you ask whether it will surpass humans in mathematics, reading, and comprehension within five years, the answer is probably yes." AGI is generally defined as AI with learning and problem-solving abilities that exceed human intelligence. He also dismissed concerns about AI chatbots occasionally providing inaccurate answers, known as hallucinations, stating, "This is solvable." He emphasized, "AI is not just about giving answers," and proposed Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) technology as the solution.
On the same day, Huang appeared on CNBC's 'Squawk on the Street' and mentioned that the price range of the Blackwell GPU could be between $30,000 and $40,000. On the first day of GTC 2024, Nvidia unveiled the next-generation chip architecture 'Blackwell' and the AI chip 'B200,' which delivers 30 times the inference performance of previous products based on this architecture.
Meanwhile, Nvidia's stock price closed at $893.98 per share on the New York Stock Exchange that day, up more than 1% from the previous session.
