Existing Investment 'Inflection AI' Absorbed
Suleyman in Charge of MS Consumer AI Division
Microsoft (MS), a leader in artificial intelligence (AI), has recruited Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of Google DeepMind and CEO of AI company Inflection AI. MS plans to effectively absorb Inflection AI, in which it had previously invested, further strengthening its leadership in the fiercely competitive AI market among big tech companies.
On the 19th (local time), MS announced that it would bring in Suleyman and a significant number of Inflection AI employees.
Suleyman will lead 'MS AI,' a newly established consumer AI division at MS. AI engineers, researchers, and large language model developers from Inflection AI will also move to the same organization. As MS Executive Vice President and Chief Officer of MS AI, Suleyman will report directly to CEO Satya Nadella on related matters.
Satya Nadella, MS CEO, stated in a press release, "I have known Mustafa for years and have admired him as the founder of DeepMind and Inflection. He is a visionary product creator who has built a pioneering team to carry out bold missions." He added, "We have found an opportunity to build technology that aligns with our mission to develop what was once thought impossible and to ensure AI benefits reach every person and organization on Earth safely and responsibly."
Suleyman founded DeepMind in 2010 and remained at Google after its acquisition for $500 million in 2014. Later, in 2022, he founded the AI startup Inflection AI and introduced the chatbot Pi.
MS has accelerated its efforts to dominate the AI market by investing broadly in AI companies such as Inflection alongside OpenAI. After investing $13 billion in OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, becoming its largest shareholder, MS has now effectively absorbed Inflection AI, in which it had invested, further enhancing its AI competitiveness.
