Promotion of Marine Forest Creation Project and Systematic Post-Management of Fisheries Resource Enhancement Facilities

Restoration of Coastal Ecosystems and Securing Fisheries Resources... Aiming to Increase Fishermen's Income

Busan City Gijang-gun is accelerating the second year of the Fisheries Resource Creation Project (Sea Forest Creation and Post-Management of Fisheries Resource Enhancement Facilities) at the Gijang-gun Fisheries Resource Research Center.

Last year, as the first year of the project, the research center began a sea forest creation project covering approximately 157 hectares in the Dongbaek waters of Gijang-gun, which was selected as a new sea forest project site in 2023. After signing a business agreement with the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency and conducting surveys and safety inspections of native seaweed, as well as holding project briefings for fishermen, the sea forest species were decided. The center then actively promoted a low-cost sea forest creation project including ▲natural rock drilling work ▲transplanting of Undaria pinnatifida ▲application of fertilizers.

In the second year this year, the sea forest creation project will continue in addition to last year's efforts. The research center plans to improve the habitat base for marine organisms and restore the coastal ecosystem by performing tasks such as controlling grazing animals and improving attachment substrates after transplanting Undaria pinnatifida and Gelidium amansii, thereby taking the lead in reducing marine carbon.

Additionally, the research center will invest a total of 150 million KRW over the next three years to conduct post-management of fisheries resource enhancement facilities established in the Gijang waters (two coastal sea ranches in Gijang and Jangan, and one spawning habitat for the dragonet).

Especially this year, systematic post-management such as ▲investigation of artificial reef facility conditions ▲effectiveness surveys ▲marine environmental impact assessments will be conducted targeting the approximately 50-hectare coastal sea ranch creation area in Gijang, while establishing fisheries resource supply bases to increase fishermen's income.

Jung Jong-bok, the county governor, stated, “Along with the creation of sea forests, we will actively support systematic management of fisheries resource enhancement facilities to contribute to the creation and restoration of fisheries resources in the coastal waters of Gijang, and furthermore, to link this with increasing fishermen's income.”
