"We Learn Together at 1st Grade Kkumbobae School"
Establishment of Elementary Literacy Recognition School, Entrance Ceremony at Haenam-gun Education Foundation
On the 18th, Haenam-gun in Jeollanam-do held a special entrance ceremony at the Haenam Lifelong Learning Center.
According to the county on the 19th, the school where students learn by dreaming, 'Kkumbobae School,' welcomed a total of 11 new students. The main figures of the entrance ceremony were elderly people in their 60s to 80s, including the oldest student, 86-year-old grandmother Oh Bun-im.
After greeting the two homeroom teachers who will be in charge of Kkumbobae School for one year and receiving new textbooks, the expressions of the elderly were full of excitement and anticipation, just like freshmen who have just entered school.

Kkumbobae School, an adult literacy education program operated by Haenam-gun, has been certified as an elementary education-recognized institution and accepted its first students this year. It has been five years since the operation of Kkumbobae School began in 2018, and students will have their elementary education recognized upon completing the three-year elementary education curriculum.
Classes include subjects such as Korean, social studies, mathematics, and English, similar to the general elementary curriculum, along with experiential activities totaling 240 hours at each stage.
With the official opening of this literacy school recognized for school-age education, Haenam-gun's adult literacy education program is also taking a significant leap forward. The establishment of a school-type literacy school provides a stable learning environment and lays the institutional foundation for expanding the curriculum.
Haenam-gun is gifting the joy of reading and writing to elderly people who previously had no opportunity to learn through the literacy education program 'Kkumbobae School.'
Kkumbobae School started in 2018 with 30 elderly participants at three locations and has grown steadily, with 171 elderly participants at 51 locations last year. This year, it has expanded to 67 locations and 256 participants, including the Lifelong Learning Center in Haenam-eup, which certifies elementary education.
In addition to group education held at lifelong learning centers or village halls in township areas, the county also provides home-visit education for learners with mobility difficulties or those living in rural areas, offering a second chance at education for residents with limited transportation options.
The main subjects of Kkumbobae School focus on Korean, mathematics, and literacy skills such as reading, writing, and arithmetic, which are essential for daily life. Above all, to maintain interest, life literacy education such as letter writing, music and art, and smartphone usage is provided according to the learners' levels.
County Governor Myeong Hyun-gwan said, “We will actively support literacy education so that any resident who wants to learn can enjoy happiness through learning at any time. I congratulate all the new students and hope they successfully complete the course and receive their diplomas.”
