Gyeonggi Province will invest a total of 40 trillion won to expand 42 railway lines by 2035.
On the 19th, Gyeonggi Province announced the ‘Gyeonggi Province Railway Master Plan’ (2026?2035), which will invest 40.7 trillion won in a total of 42 lines spanning 645 km, including 27 lines of high-speed rail, conventional rail, and metropolitan rail, as well as 15 urban rail lines.
According to the master plan, Gyeonggi Province will first extend KTX to Munsan and SRT to Uijeongbu to expand high-speed rail usage opportunities in the northern Gyeonggi region.
Currently, high-speed rail is only accessible at Goyang Haengsin Station in northern Gyeonggi. For the rest of the northern area, the concept of a ‘nationwide half-day living zone’ via rail remains distant. Accordingly, Gyeonggi Province plans to construct a new track connecting Goyang Haengsin Vehicle Depot, a KTX stop, to Neunggok Station on the Gyeongui Line, enabling service to Paju Munsan.
Additionally, the SRT will be extended from Suseo to Samseong Station using the GTX-A line and from Suseo to Uijeongbu Station using the GTX-C line.
Gyeonggi Province will also significantly expand conventional rail in areas with underdeveloped rail services.
In the north, the single-track section of the Gyeongwon Line between Dongducheon and Yeoncheon, which opened late last year, will be double-tracked and extended to Cheorwon. Furthermore, the suburban line connecting Uijeongbu and Goyang Neunggok will resume operation in the second half of this year. Currently, only diesel trains operate on this line, but electrification will be pursued in the future to complete the Gyeonggi circular railway network.
Meanwhile, in the south, a new Semiconductor Line will be established. This line will connect the Namsa Semiconductor National Industrial Complex in Yongin, the Wonsam Semiconductor Cluster, and Icheon Bubal. This is a measure to support the ‘K-Semiconductor Belt,’ the world’s largest semiconductor supply chain. Additionally, the Semiconductor Line will be extended westward to connect to Jeongok Port in Hwaseong, and the Gyeonggi Southern East-West Line will be further reviewed.
Gyeonggi Province will actively promote metropolitan railway projects to improve commuting convenience in the metropolitan area and will continue consultations with Seoul, Incheon, and other cities.
The Sincheon-Sillim Line is a route reviewed through an agreement in November 2022 between Gyeonggi Province and four local governments: Siheung, Gwangmyeong, Geumcheon-gu, and Gwanak-gu. Once confirmed, it will facilitate easier access to Seoul for residents in the western regions such as Gwangmyeong and Siheung.
Also, the extension of the Byeollae Line to Uijeongbu will complete the Gyeonggi circular railway network, and the extension of Line 3 in southern Gyeonggi, an additional review project, will be extended to Hwaseong in connection with the relocation of the Suseo Vehicle Depot. This plan is being made in cooperation with four local governments: Seongnam, Yongin, Suwon, and Hwaseong. A joint feasibility study is currently underway, and depending on the results, the plan will be incorporated as an additional review project.
Gyeonggi Province will also develop urban rail projects in local neighborhoods. To this end, 12 lines expanding rail within residents’ living areas have been selected, including the Dongbaek-Sinbong Line, Pangyo-Opo Line, and Deokjeong-Okjeong Line.
The Dongbaek-Sinbong Line was submitted as ‘Citizen Petition No. 3’ and its prompt advancement has been promised. The Pangyo-Opo Line is intended to alleviate chronic congestion at Taejae Hill on National Road 57, which connects Gwangju to Seongnam. The Deokjeong-Okjeong Line is linked with the currently designed Okjeong-Pocheon Line, allowing direct travel from Pocheon to Deokjeong Station on the GTX-C Line. Once opened, it will enable travel to Samseong Station in Gangnam within 50 minutes.
Gyeonggi Province especially included three lines in the northern region living zones: the Gajwa-Siksa Line, Daegok-Goyang City Hall-Siksa Line, and Deokjeong-Okjeong Line.
Governor Kim Dong-yeon of Gyeonggi Province held a press conference on the day and said, “Gyeonggi Province has established the ‘2nd Gyeonggi Province Urban Railway Network Construction Plan (draft)’ containing these details and collected residents’ opinions through a public hearing last December. We will do our best to ensure prompt progress through consultations with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.”
