Incheon City will actively work to reduce the use of disposable products in response to the ban on direct landfill of metropolitan area household waste.
The city announced on the 19th that it has prepared an implementation plan to reduce the use of disposable products, starting with public institutions, and plans to expand and establish a culture of reducing disposable product use in citizens' daily lives.
First, the Incheon City ordinance restricting the use of disposable products, which has been in effect since November 2019, will be amended to strengthen the restriction on the use of disposable products in public institutions from a "recommendation" to a "mandatory" requirement.
Additionally, infrastructure will be established to enable the use of reusable products in public buildings, and public institutions will operate disposable product zero days and promote eco-friendly festivals and events without disposable products. The city plans to encourage participation from the 10 districts and reflect related best practices, such as revitalizing the reusable container business, in the comprehensive evaluation indicators of administrative performance.
Along with this, to establish the use of reusable containers as a part of citizens' lifestyle culture, the reusable container business will be expanded to include funeral homes, food delivery packaging, and large events and festivals.
An official from Incheon City said, "With the ban on direct landfill of metropolitan area household waste approaching, active waste reduction policies are necessary," and added, "Starting with public institutions, we will actively promote the implementation plan to ensure that the culture of reducing disposable product use is established in citizens' daily lives."
