Seoul City Selected for 'Waterfront Vitality Hub Creation Contest' ... Secures 3 Billion KRW in City Funds
Creating Rest Areas with Stands, Shelters, and Busking Stages Overlooking River Scenery
Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) is redeveloping the area along the Jungnangcheon embankment into a ‘waterside emotional hub’ where culture, relaxation, and art come together.
As part of the ‘Seoul-style Waterside Emotional City’ project, which reorganizes waterside spaces along small streams and rivulets throughout Seoul to allow citizens to enjoy diverse leisure and cultural activities, the district was finally selected in the Seoul city contest last September and secured 3 billion KRW in city funds (300 million KRW for design, 2.7 billion KRW for construction).
The project site, the Jungnangcheon embankment path in Dongdaemun-gu (Jangan Cherry Blossom Road), is a popular spot where many residents enjoy exercise and relaxation throughout the four seasons. Especially in spring, when cherry trees on both sides of the path form a ‘cherry blossom tunnel,’ it becomes a main stage for the ‘Spring Flower Festival’ and a well-known attraction in Dongdaemun-gu.
The district plans to develop the embankment area in front of Jangpyeong Neighborhood Park and the Community Sports Center into a ‘waterside emotional hub’ featuring ▲a busking performance stage ▲stands offering views of Jungnangcheon and Yongmasan Mountain ▲a user rest area (cafe) ▲and ramps accessible for strollers and wheelchairs.
Currently, the district is conducting the ‘Jungnangcheon Waterside Vitality Hub Basic and Detailed Design Service’ together with Seoul City. After completing the basic plan by April and the detailed design by October, the project aims for completion in the first half of next year.
Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, said, “We will reorganize the Jungnangcheon embankment path into an attractive waterside space where more residents can fully enjoy the flowers, breeze, and river scenery, as well as various cultural and artistic performances.”
