The Ministry of Government Legislation announced on the 18th that Lee Wan-gyu, the Minister of Government Legislation, visited the 'Gwangju National AI Data Center' located in Buk-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City on the 15th and held an on-site meeting to discuss legal and institutional improvement measures for the activation of new artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

The meeting was attended by Minister Lee, employees of the Ministry of Government Legislation, startup companies, Gwangju Metropolitan City officials, and executives and staff of the AI Industry Convergence Project Group.

Completed in 2023, the National AI Data Center is the largest center in Korea capable of vast data learning and analysis based on high-performance computing necessary for AI research and development. It supports startups and venture companies to stably conduct research and development, product services, and more, and thus hosts various startup companies.

During the meeting, various improvement opinions on related laws and systems were shared, including the provision of AI learning data and content guidelines and the introduction of a certification system for companies that have legally secured copyrights.

A representative of an AI data company attending the meeting stated, "It is not easy to clearly understand the legal requirements regarding data and personal information," and expressed the opinion that "guidelines or related education on AI-related laws and systems should be provided."

Gwangju Metropolitan City (AI Industry Convergence Project Group) also proposed sharing the data analysis and learning (machine learning) technology of the National AI Data Center in the generative AI legal information service planned by the Ministry of Government Legislation and continuous mutual cooperation.

The Ministry of Government Legislation plans to consult with relevant ministries regarding the opinions discussed that day and prepare improvement measures for parts that require legalization. Additionally, in the intelligent legal search system scheduled to be opened to the public by the end of this year, a window for providing the latest AI-related legal and institutional information will be established to introduce changes in related laws and the latest domestic and international AI laws and systems.

Minister Lee Wan-gyu said, "As changes using artificial intelligence technology are rapidly occurring in various fields of society, it is necessary to predict the future of related new industries and lead them boldly," adding, "The Ministry of Government Legislation will legally support companies to continue their challenges and innovations and promote various legal and institutional improvements that can directly help the lives of the people."

Lee Sang-gap, Deputy Mayor of Culture and Economy of Gwangju City, said, "Gwangju is planning to play the role of a national AI innovation hub and a large-scale urban infrastructure demonstration project using artificial intelligence, so we expect numerous companies to continue their challenges," and urged, "I hope the Ministry of Government Legislation will continuously strive to improve laws and systems so that companies' challenges and innovations can bear fruit."
