Busan City will simultaneously launch a promotional campaign for ‘Revitalizing Public Transportation Usage’ at 7:30 a.m. on the 18th across 15 locations to create the nation’s top public transportation-friendly city.
The city, together with 12 districts and counties including Dongnae-gu and Nam-gu, transportation-related organizations such as Busan Transportation Corporation and the Bus Association, Dongbaek Pass operators like Mybi, Busan Bank, and Nonghyup, as well as Dongbaek Supporters composed of university students from the Busan area, will conduct a citywide campaign to encourage citizens to participate in using public transportation.
In particular, the campaign will focus on delivering accurate information about the key transportation initiatives for 2024, including the launch of the prepaid Dongbaek Pass on the 18th and the comprehensive overhaul of bus routes centered on citizen convenience, emphasizing the benefits citizens will receive.
The campaign will be held at 15 locations across districts and counties with high public transportation usage, including five urban railway stations (Seomyeon, City Hall, Yeonsan stations, etc.) and major intersections such as Daeyeon Intersection and Seomyeon Intersection.
About 170 participants, including officials from Busan City, Busan Transportation Corporation, Busan City Bus Association, Busan Village Bus Association, Busan Bank, Nonghyup, Mybi staff, and university students forming the Dongbaek Supporters, will gather for the campaign at Yeonsan Station, City Hall Station, and Seomyeon Station areas.
Additionally, over 200 people will participate in supporting events at 12 major hubs, including key urban railway stations such as Jure Station and Guseo Station, as well as Daeyeon Intersection and Seomyeon Intersection.
Through this campaign, the city plans to actively communicate with citizens who are beneficiaries of the policies by focusing on promoting three key areas with eight tasks: the launch of the ‘prepaid Dongbaek Pass’ usable by anyone, a comprehensive overhaul of bus routes centered on citizen convenience, and the ‘Busan-type MaaS project’ that connects various transportation modes into a single platform.
The MaaS (Mobility as a Service) project is a system that integrates and operates all information for searching and paying for various transportation modes, from shared bicycles to public transportation.
Furthermore, the city will provide accurate information and actively communicate with citizens about convenient public transportation services that citizens can experience firsthand, such as the 2nd Busan Urban Railway Network Construction Plan reflecting changed urban conditions and transportation demand, and the Tagless system that automatically charges fares without tapping a transportation card.
The prepaid Dongbaek Pass launching on the 18th is a method where transportation fares are charged onto the Dongbaekjeon prepaid card, and if usage exceeds 45,000 KRW per month, a Dongbaekjeon refund benefit is provided. It can be issued to any citizen aged 18 or older, including low-credit individuals and foreigners.
The card can be applied for via the Dongbaekjeon app or Busan Bank, and fare charging is available through convenience stores, urban railway stations, and the Easy Charge Station app. Notably, the target range will be expanded to include teenagers in the second half of this year.
Jung Im-su, Director of the City’s Transportation Bureau, said, “We will activate public transportation usage to reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions, improve the convenience of public transportation, and enhance citizens’ quality of life and environmental sustainability.” He added, “We will steadily implement various innovative transportation projects such as the introduction of the prepaid Dongbaek Pass, establishment of Busan-type MaaS, and adoption of contactless payment systems to achieve a 50% public transportation modal share by 2025.”
The city plans to conduct promotional campaigns quarterly to achieve the 50% public transportation modal share target by 2025 and to revitalize public transportation usage.
