Seongbuk Literary Figures' Lives and Local Literature Showcase
Rare First Edition of Silence of the Lord Also Presented Nationwide
‘The City of Literature, Seongbuk’ will open the Seongbuk Modern and Contemporary Literature Museum on the 19th to showcase the diverse aspects of Seongbuk’s writers and literature. Seongbuk was the home and stage for prominent figures in Korean literary history such as Han Yong-un, Yi Yuk-sa, Lee Tae-jun, Jo Ji-hoon, and Park Wan-seo, and served as a place for communication and empathy.
Seongbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) has opened the Seongbuk Modern and Contemporary Literature Museum as a hub that collects comprehensive materials related to writers who lived in the area, literary works depicting the region, and provides visitors with various literary communications.
The Seongbuk Modern and Contemporary Literature Museum (24 Seongbuk-ro 21-gil) is a three-story building with a site area of 570㎡ and a total floor area of 447㎡. It consists of a permanent exhibition hall on the 2nd floor, a special exhibition hall on the 1st floor, and a reference room in the basement. Through special exhibitions, the establishment of a literary archive, operation of various experiential programs, literary research, and network building, it is expected to serve as a key hub showcasing the lives of Seongbuk writers and regional literature. The opening ceremony will be held on the 19th from 3 p.m.
The permanent exhibition hall introduces various literary works that symbolize Seongbuk and major writers, displaying the diverse aspects of Seongbuk as a place of communication and empathy through literary magazines and more. Experiential activities such as listening to Seongbuk literature, literary maps, and transcription experiences are also prepared.
The special exhibition hall will honor Manhae Han Yong-un, a representative writer of Seongbuk and an independence activist, through the opening special exhibition “Everything That Has Come Is the Beloved.” To commemorate the 80th anniversary of Manhae’s passing and in remembrance, various materials including the first edition of “The Silence of the Beloved” will be exhibited.
In particular, the rare and valuable first edition of “The Silence of the Beloved” (1926, Hoedong Seogwan), which is rare nationwide, will be displayed. Along with this, there will be a session where citizens of various ages from their teens to their sixties, together with Han Yong-un’s descendants, recite Manhae’s poems.
Mayor Lee Seung-ro said, “Seongbuk was the home and stage for Korean modern and contemporary writers and a place for communication and empathy. Based on these spatial characteristics, we have created the Seongbuk Modern and Contemporary Literature Museum as a literary platform that collects, exhibits, and educates literary materials.”
