"Test-tube baby is not my bloodline" Shocked couple devastated by hospital and doctor's response

"Hospital and Professor Consistently Avoid Responsibility with 'Ignorance'"

A dispute has arisen between the parents and the hospital and doctors over the cause and responsibility after it was belatedly revealed that a child born through in vitro fertilization (IVF) had a blood type that could not have come from the parents.

Park Sang-gyu, head of the investigative group Sherlock, said on the MBC radio program "Kim Jong-bae's Focus" on the 14th, "A couple suffering from infertility visited a university hospital in 1996 and underwent IVF, resulting in a son in the spring of 1997, followed by a daughter through IVF by the same doctor." However, the couple, Mr. and Mrs. A, who underwent IVF at that time, filed a lawsuit in 2022 against B University Hospital in Seoul and Professor C, who previously worked at that hospital, seeking damages.

After the birth, when the parents asked why the child's blood type was different from theirs, the doctor dismissed their concerns by claiming it was a "blood type mutation," attempting to evade the situation at the time.

The lawsuit is currently at the hearing stage. During this process, the B hospital side reportedly claimed that Ms. A might have conceived naturally during the IVF procedure. The hospital implied the possibility that Ms. A had an extramarital affair before the IVF. In response, Ms. A stated, "I was immediately hospitalized after the IVF due to health issues and concerns about miscarriage," calling the claim absurd.

The B hospital did not stop there and reportedly offered a consolation payment of 10 million won through their legal representatives. Professor C also reportedly responded through a representative, saying he did not remember the details.

Both parents have blood type B, but the son's blood type is A

Previously, the couple underwent IVF led by Professor C at the obstetrics and gynecology department of B hospital in 1996, resulting in a son the following year. Around 2002, when the son was about five years old, they visited the pediatric department for a hepatitis antibody test and discovered that the son's blood type differed from the parents'. Both parents had blood type B, but the son’s blood type was A.

Professor C presented documents in English explaining that children born through IVF sometimes have blood types different from their parents due to mutations, and the couple firmly believed this explanation at the time. The son grew up to adulthood, and the couple wanted to clarify the blood type discrepancy, so they contacted Professor C in early 2022 to request the documents he had shown them in the past. Although they had occasionally exchanged greetings, Professor C stopped responding and disappeared after this point.

Feeling frustrated, the couple also inquired with the hospital, but only received a response that they could not help. Eventually, the couple underwent genetic testing and received scientific results showing that the son was not their biological child. This truth was revealed 26 years after the IVF procedure. Ms. A said, "We filed the lawsuit to seek a sincere apology and uncover the truth. Yet, B hospital and Professor C continue to evade responsibility." She added, "Our son knows everything and says, 'If a wrong procedure happened to me, someone else must have gone through this too, so the truth must be revealed.'"
