A Total of Approximately 16 Million KRW in Fines to Be Imposed on the Resident
The Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province Election Commission (hereinafter 'Jeonbuk Election Commission') announced on the 14th that it reported a total of three individuals, including preliminary candidate A, to the prosecution on the 27th of last month for making donations to constituents in relation to the 22nd National Assembly election.
According to the Jeonbuk Election Commission, preliminary candidate A, in collusion with volunteers B and C, gathered about 60 constituents at a restaurant for the purpose of election campaigning, made campaign speeches, and provided meals worth approximately 1.6 million KRW.
The Election Commission plans to impose fines on the constituents who received the meals at 10 to 20 times the value of the provided meals, with the total amount of fines expected to be about 16 million KRW.
Article 113 of the Public Official Election Act prohibits candidates from making donations to constituents or those with ties to the electoral district, and Article 115 restricts third-party election donations. Violations are punishable by imprisonment of up to five years or fines of up to 10 million KRW.
The Jeonbuk Election Commission stated, "Both the giver and receiver will be strictly dealt with for serious election crimes such as donation acts that disrupt election order," and urged, "With the National Assembly election just over 30 days away, we ask all residents to take an interest and report any illegal election campaigning, including the provision of money or goods, that they witness."
