Changwon Special City to Resound with Shouts of "Long Live Korean Independence" Reenacted from 1919

The Shout of Defiance on That Day Against Japanese Imperialism

Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam reenacts the cries of that day 105 years ago in 1919 when people shouted “Daehan Independence Manse” to resist Japanese colonial rule through the ▲3·23 Changwon Eupmin Independence Manse Movement ▲4·3 Samjin United Uprising ▲4·3 Ungdong Independence Manse Movement.

The 3·23 Changwon Eupmin Independence Manse Movement was a large-scale protest that took place twice on March 23 and April 2, 1919, in the northeastern area of Uichang-dong, Uichang-gu, where about 6,000 people gathered at the market to carry out the independence manse movement.


On the 23rd at 11 a.m., about 100 students and citizens will reenact the commemorative ceremony, reading of the Declaration of Independence, and three cheers of manse at Dureok Children’s Park in Uichang-dong, Uichang-gu, organized by the Gyeongnam Citizens’ Cultural Network.


The 4·3 Samjin United Uprising was a large-scale united protest involving about 5,000 residents from three areas?Jinjeon-myeon, Jinbuk-myeon, and Jindong-myeon in Masanhappo-gu. Along with the manse movements in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province; Seoncheon, North Pyongan Province; and Suan, Hwanghae Province, it was counted as one of the four major manse movements.


During the violent suppression by Japanese police and military forces, eight people died and 22 were injured at Sadonggyo.


On April 3 at 10 a.m., about 200 local residents and students will participate in a commemorative ceremony, Taegeukgi parade, and memorial service at the Paluisa Changui Tower area (located in Jinbuk-myeon, Masanhappo-gu).


The 4·3 Ungdong Independence Manse Movement was led by teachers of Gyegwang School (the predecessor of Ungdong Middle School) located in Macheon-dong at the time, along with about 3,000 Ungdong residents who participated in the independence manse movement.


To reenact this event, on April 3 at 10 a.m., about 400 teachers, students of Ungdong Middle School, and local residents will participate in the reenactment event of the independence manse movement at the origin sites such as Ungdong Sosa Bridge, organized by Ungdong Middle School.


Hong Nampyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City, said, “I hope this meaningful occasion, which reenacts the noble spirit of sacrifice of our ancestors 105 years ago, will be an opportunity for many local residents and students to learn about the proud history and culture of our hometown.”
