Burns and Dog Bites... Up to 10 Million KRW Free Insurance for All Yongsan-gu Residents

Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) will provide safety insurance for all residents, including registered foreigners, until February next year. This institutional measure is designed to help residents who suffer from unexpected disasters or safety accidents achieve stability in their lives.

The residents' safety insurance, introduced for the first time this year, pays insurance benefits to residents who suffer death, permanent disability, or injuries due to various disasters or safety accidents through an insurance company contracted with the district office. Since the district office directly contracts with the insurance company and completes the payment of premiums, residents do not need to go through any separate enrollment procedures or bear any costs.

The insurance period lasts until February 22 of next year, and all residents registered in Yongsan-gu, including registered foreigners, are eligible for benefits. Residents who move into the district during the insurance period are automatically enrolled, and coverage is automatically terminated upon moving out.

The residents' safety insurance covers five categories: ▲burn surgery expenses ▲emergency room treatment fees for dog bite accidents ▲accidental death ▲accidental permanent disability ▲injury treatment expenses for public transportation accidents. Coverage applies to Yongsan-gu residents regardless of location.

A district official stated, “The coverage items are composed to protect against sudden and accidental external injuries, offering a broader scope of coverage compared to the existing Seoul City citizens' safety insurance.”

Surgical expenses for treating second-degree or higher thermal burns caused by injury are paid at 200,000 KRW per occurrence. In cases of emergency room treatment due to bites from stray dogs, abandoned dogs, or pets, 100,000 KRW is covered.

If death caused by injury is recognized, compensation of 10 million KRW is provided, and in the event of permanent disability, compensation is available up to 2 million KRW based on item-specific assessment criteria. However, according to commercial law, those under 15 years old are not eligible for compensation for accidental death. For injuries sustained in traffic accidents while using public transportation, injury treatment expenses are supported up to 1 million KRW according to injury grades from 1 to 13.

The residents' safety insurance allows recipients to receive compensation simultaneously regardless of whether they have other insurance policies such as citizens' safety insurance or personal insurance.

Residents wishing to receive compensation must file a claim within three years from the date the claim event occurred. Before applying, they should contact the insurance company’s integrated consultation center, prepare the required claim documents for each coverage item as guided, and submit them to the insurance company.

Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, “We hope no residents suffer from safety accidents, but we have prepared residents' safety insurance to be ready for any unforeseen events. Starting with this first year of operation, we will gradually expand coverage items and budget size to provide more reliable support.”

Meanwhile, the district also operates Yongsan-gu residents' bicycle insurance. In cases where residents suffer accidents related to bicycles, insurance benefits are paid for seven coverage items including death, permanent disability, injury consolation money, and hospitalization consolation money.
