PhD Candidate in Ocean Engineering Conducts Research on Ground Disaster Risk Assessment Using Deep Learning
National Pukyong University (President Jang Young-su) announced on the 12th that Changho Song from the Department of Ocean Engineering (PhD candidate) received the Excellent Paper Award at the 2024 Korea Disaster Prevention Society Academic Conference.

He received the award for his paper titled "Risk Assessment of Ground Disasters Induced by the Complex Interaction of Rainfall and Earthquakes Using Deep Learning" (Advisor: Yuntae Kim) at the recent academic conference held at Jeju Shinhwa World, themed "Paradigm Shift in Disaster Management."
At the conference, which featured sessions such as Research Group/Project Group sessions, Specialized Committee sessions, International sessions, Early Career sessions, Oral sessions, Poster sessions, and APDRC Poster sessions, he presented his paper in the ground disaster prevention field during the Poster session and received excellent evaluations.
In this paper, Changho Song presented research results evaluating the risk of ground disasters induced by the combined effects of rainfall and earthquakes using deep learning for proactive response in high-risk ground disaster areas.
Focusing on areas where large-scale ground disasters occurred due to simultaneous rainfall and earthquakes, a database of rainfall, earthquake, and topographic data was constructed, and the risk of ground disasters was assessed using deep learning. The results showed an 8.2% higher accuracy compared to existing physics-based models.
The Korea Disaster Prevention Society, established in 2000 with the purpose of advancing academic and technological development in all stages of disaster management including prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery, is South Korea's leading academic organization in disaster and safety management with over 5,500 members active in various fields.
