Upstage and Law&Company will jointly develop a large language model (LLM) specialized in Korean law. They plan to launch generative artificial intelligence (AI) services to target the global legal services market.
Upstage announced on the 12th that it has signed a business agreement with Law&Company to jointly develop a Korean law-specialized LLM called "Sola Legal" (tentative name).

The two companies will leverage their accumulated technological capabilities and know-how in their respective fields, such as in-house LLM development and legal AI research, to jointly develop a "legal-specialized LLM foundation model." The resulting Sola Legal is scheduled to be launched in June this year. Upstage will be responsible for developing the LLM engine of Sola Legal. Based on this model, they will jointly promote a full-scale legal tech business.
Through this agreement, Law&Company will utilize its extensive legal data for the development of Sola Legal, including the largest domestic database of 4.43 million court rulings, as well as 160,000 legal data items such as statutes, precedents, and official interpretations. Law&Company will provide its years of accumulated expertise in legal data training and collaborate on the technical aspects necessary to enhance AI model performance.
Sola Legal will be primarily applied to Law&Company’s business-to-business (B2B) software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform "SuperLawyer," which offers legal research, document summarization, and Q&A services. It will be deployed in an on-premises configuration, optimized to provide generative AI services requiring high security and performance for institutions and law firms.
Kim Seong-hoon, CEO of Upstage, said, "We are pleased to lead generative AI innovation in the legal field by partnering with Law&Company, a domestic legal tech frontrunner. Going forward, Upstage will continuously advance its legal-specialized AI model targeting domestic and international legal service markets, based on its world-class proprietary language model, Sola."
Kim Bon-hwan, CEO of Law&Company, stated, "The fierce challenge from global AI giants in the Korean legal market has heightened the sense of crisis across the domestic legal tech industry. With a firm determination to protect technological sovereignty in Korea’s legal AI market, we will introduce innovative services that will change the landscape of the domestic and international legal tech markets."
