Last year, India recorded the world's largest population, and the number of Indian international students in U.S. universities has significantly increased, nearly surpassing Chinese international students.
According to foreign media including the Associated Press, the number of Indian international students enrolled in U.S. universities from 2022 to 2023 was approximately 269,000, a 35% increase compared to previous years.
At the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) alone, the number of Indian students has risen from 3,000 to 4,400 over the past four years. This is attributed to the growing perception in India that obtaining a degree from a prestigious U.S. university is a fast track to success, along with an increase in young people seeking jobs abroad.
In India, rapid population growth has led to limitations in university capacity and job availability, prompting many talented individuals to look toward the United States.
On the other hand, the number of Chinese international students in U.S. universities is declining. At UTD, the number of Chinese students has dropped from 1,200 to 400 over the past four years. This is a result of worsening U.S.-China relations and China's economic slowdown.
