Planting of 169,000 Trees Including Wando Horanggashinamu and Hwangchil Trees
Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Shin Woo-cheol) will actively commence the 2024 afforestation project to develop the local forests into public and economically valuable forests, responding to climate change caused by global warming and expanding carbon sinks.
According to the county on the 11th, this year's afforestation projects are divided into Hwangchil specialized forest creation (20 ha), azalea specialized forest creation (10 ha), island area forest management (15 ha), economic tree afforestation (37 ha), and forest disaster prevention afforestation (10 ha).

The county will invest a total project cost of 1.4 billion KRW to plant 169,000 trees of 16 species, including Wando horanggasinamu (Ilex integra), Hwangchil tree (Dendropanax morbiferus), and camellia, which are regional subtropical tree species, over 97 hectares.
In particular, Wando-gun is the main production area of Hwangchil in Korea, where the natural forest of Hwangchil is most widely distributed. From 2016 to 2023, a total of 5.2 billion KRW has been invested to create a Hwangchil specialized forest over 165 hectares.
This year, a Hwangchil specialized forest will be created over 20 hectares of forest in Nohwa, Gunoe, Shinji, and Gogeum areas.
The azalea specialized forest creation project is expected to provide a beautiful landscape and be specialized as a forest tourism resource by planting an additional 50,000 mountain azaleas in the background of Jindallae Park in Yaksan-myeon.
As the average annual temperature rise accelerates, the tree planting season is advancing, so the county plans to promptly carry out the afforestation project to improve the survival rate of planted trees.
Park Eun-jae, Director of the Forest Recreation Division, said, “We will contribute to responding to climate change and establishing a sustainable forest resource circulation system by expanding subtropical forests with high carbon absorption capacity.”
