Since the opening of the Sillim Line light rail at the end of May 2022, the number of residents visiting Gwanak-gu (District Mayor Park Jun-hee) has been increasing.

According to the Seoul Open Data Plaza, the number of passengers boarding and alighting at the Sillim Line stations within Gwanak-gu (Gwanaksan (Seoul National University) Station, Seoul National University Venture Town Station, Seowon Station, Sillim Station) has significantly risen from about 380,000 immediately after the line's opening (as of June 2022) to about 500,000 recently (as of January 2024).

The Sillim Line connects a total of 7.8 km and 11 stations from Gwanaksan (Seoul National University) Station to Yeouido Saetgang Station. It offers transfers to Subway Line 1 (Daebang Station), Line 2 (Sillim Station), Line 7 (Boramae Station), and Line 9 (Saetgang Station), making it easier for residents from other areas to visit Gwanak-gu.

In response, Gwanak-gu is accelerating efforts to create recreational spaces that can be enjoyed not only by local residents but also by visitors from other regions.

The district plans to invest a total of 3.3 billion KRW to transform the waterside areas around the Sillim Line stations within the district (▲Gwanaksan Station (Sillim 5-gyo Bridge) ▲Seoul National University Venture Town Station (Dongbang 1-gyo Bridge, Sillim 3-gyo Bridge) ▲Seowon Station (Munhwa Bridge)) into cultural spaces by December.

So far, the basic concept establishment, civil engineering structures, water supply and drainage, traffic, landscaping, and structural reviews have been completed through detailed design services, and full-scale construction began in March.

At ‘Gwanaksan Station (Sillim 5-gyo Bridge)’, a barrier-free deck road will be installed using leftover park land to improve access to Gwanaksan and enhance resting areas, along with the creation of a wildflower garden and nighttime pergola.

The district is also focusing on making Byeolbitnaerin Stream (Dorimcheon), a representative resource of the district, a notable attraction.

At ‘Seoul National University Venture Town Station (Dongbang 1-gyo Bridge, Sillim 3-gyo Bridge)’, nightscape lighting media projectors and specialized lighting facilities inspired by the Goryeo Dynasty general Gang Gam-chan will be installed to bring vibrancy to the nearby Byeolbitnaerin Stream (Dorimcheon).

At ‘Seowon Station (Munhwa Bridge)’, seasonal constellation-themed lighting, waterside fountains, waterside stands, and deck rest areas will be installed to create a beautiful and visually engaging waterside space.

Additionally, the district is working on creating ‘outing and resting spaces’ that connect the Sillim Line stations with Byeolbitnaerin Stream (Dorimcheon).

The district plans to restore the last unrecovered section of Byeolbitnaerin Stream (Dorimcheon) in front of the main gate of Seoul National University by June this year.

By restoring Byeolbitnaerin Stream (Dorimcheon), the district aims to establish a pedestrian network environment extending to Gwanaksan and realize a ‘clean living space’ that harmonizes the three elements of ‘Gwanaksan, Byeolbitnaerin Stream, and Bongcheon Stream’.

District Mayor Park Jun-hee said, “We will enhance the image of Byeolbitnaerin Stream (Dorimcheon), a precious asset and representative healing space of Gwanak-gu, and create a landmark representing the southwestern region by utilizing various water features. We will continue to do our best to improve residents’ quality of life and happiness index through policies that residents can feel.”
