Tongyeong Yokjido Abalone Fishing Boat Rescue: 3 Unconscious, 6 Missing (Comprehensive)

On the 9th, three of the nine missing crew members from a capsized fishing vessel off Yoksido, Tongyeong-si, Gyeongnam, were rescued first.


The Tongyeong Coast Guard rescued three crew members inside the vessel: one near the crew quarters entrance at around 8:40 a.m., and two near the crew quarters entrance and the wheelhouse at around 9:27 a.m. and 9:52 a.m., respectively. All three were found unconscious and were given CPR before being transported to a nearby hospital.


The Coast Guard estimates that two of the three rescued are foreigners, and one is a Korean national.

Currently, rescue personnel along with 12 patrol vessels, 4 naval ships, and 6 aircraft are searching inside the vessel and the accident area.


The accident occurred at around 6:29 a.m. in waters 37 nautical miles (approximately 68 km) south of Yoksido, Tongyeong-si, Gyeongnam, when a 29-ton coastal longline fishing vessel registered in Jeju capsized.


There were nine people on board, including the captain and one other Korean crew member, and seven Indonesian crew members.


The vessel had departed from Hallim Port, Jeju-si, Jeju-do on the 7th, operating in the Yoksido waters as part of a fleet with another vessel.


One vessel in the fleet reported to the Jeju Fishing Vessel Safety Operation Center at 6:02 a.m. that it had lost contact with the accident vessel, and at around 6:43 a.m., the capsized vessel was confirmed floating.


The Coast Guard stated that the weather conditions in the accident area are not hindering rescue and search operations.
