Opening of 'Gitjae Tunnel' Connecting Yeonggwang Daema and Jangseong Samgye

Relieving Winter Vehicle Inconveniences... Expansion of Regional Arterial Transportation Network

Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 8th that it has completed the construction of the Gitjae Tunnel on Local Road No. 734 connecting Yeonggwang Daema and Jangseong Samgye, and fully opened the road starting with the Gitjae Tunnel opening ceremony on the 7th.

According to the county, about 300 people including Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, Kang Jong-man, Mayor of Yeonggwang-gun, Kim Han-jong, Mayor of Jangseong-gun, Kang Pil-gu, Chairman of Yeonggwang County Council, members of the Jeollanam-do Council, members of Yeonggwang and Jangseong County Councils, local residents, and construction officials attended the grand opening event of the Gitjae Tunnel.

The opening of the Gitjae Tunnel has resolved residents' vehicle traffic inconveniences caused by road icing during winter and expanded the main transportation network connecting Gochang, Yeonggwang, and Jangseong. It will greatly contribute to regional development by enhancing transportation convenience for local residents and revitalizing the local tourism industry.

The Gitjae Tunnel, newly connecting Yeonggwang and Jangseong, is a project promoted by Jeollanam-do. Construction began in 2017, with a total road length of 3.95 km including a 1.1 km tunnel, a road width of 9.5 m, and a total project cost of 55 billion KRW. The construction was completed last February.

Kang Jong-man, Mayor of Yeonggwang-gun, stated, "I feel deeply moved that the construction of the Gitjae Tunnel, which has been a long-standing wish of the residents of Yeonggwang and Jangseong during winter, has finally been completed."
