[Taboleo] If You Wanted More Dynamic Than E, More Sophisticated Than C

Mercedes-Benz CLE 450 4MATIC Test Drive
Quiet and Powerful Driving with 6-Cylinder Gasoline Engine

Mercedes-Benz has streamlined its coupe lineup. Previously, the mid-size sedan C-Class and the near-luxury E-Class each had their own coupe models, but now they have been consolidated into a single CLE model. The CLE aims to capture both the luxurious feel that C-Class coupe drivers felt was lacking and the dynamic driving performance that E-Class customers desired.

Coupes are not a popular choice for many, both domestically and internationally, as they are overshadowed by sedans and sport utility vehicles (SUVs). However, they tend to stand out with their stylish body designs. Their elegant exteriors often shape the overall impression of the brand. This is why Mercedes refers to models like coupes and convertibles collectively as dream cars. In an era where practicality often outweighs style when choosing a car, this vehicle offers a glimpse into how a long-established automotive brand appeals to both new and existing potential customers.

The CLE is available in South Korea in two variants: the CLE 200 and the CLE 450 4MATIC. The CLE 450 4MATIC, which we tested, features a 6-cylinder gasoline engine (M256) paired with a 48V mild hybrid system. Mercedes’ 6-cylinder engines are known for being quiet and powerful, making them a powertrain that satisfies most drivers. Downsizing to smaller displacement engines is an inevitable trend, making 6-cylinder engines increasingly rare even in the E-Class, but Mercedes boldly applied it to the new coupe. The price of the new car is 96 million KRW, making it the only 6-cylinder model from the brand available for under 100 million KRW.

With two doors, a long hood, and a thickly contoured bonnet, the car gives off a dynamic first impression. However, when driving, the distinctive Mercedes-Benz sense of composure is even more impressive. Even at fairly high speeds, it delivers power smoothly and confidently without feeling strained, demonstrating stable driving performance. The time it takes to accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h is 4.4 seconds, ensuring agility as well.

The official fuel efficiency is 10.9 km per liter, and after driving about 90 km through congested city streets, highways, and national roads, the trip computer showed around 12 km per liter. The car runs well without any shortcomings, and its efficiency is likely thanks to the hybrid system, which helps use fuel more efficiently during engine start and initial acceleration. The suspension settings can be adjusted according to driving conditions, and the rear wheels can steer up to 2.5 degrees, reducing the turning burden despite the long body.

As a 2-door coupe, the front seats are spacious. The wheelbase has been extended compared to the E-Class coupe to secure more interior space. The rear seats accommodate two passengers with a storage compartment in the middle. It is somewhat cramped for an adult male to sit for extended periods. However, the trunk can comfortably hold about three golf bags.

The driver’s instrument cluster and central display are large, and like the recently released new E-Class, the CLE features the third-generation MBUX infotainment system. It is intuitive and includes routine functions that automatically execute frequently used features, making it easy to operate even for first-time users.

The Burmester 3D surround sound system, with speakers densely placed throughout the interior, provides ample enjoyment for music lovers. Customer deliveries began last month, and the CLE 200 will be introduced later this month. The roof-opening CLE Cabriolet and the high-performance AMG Cabriolet versions are also scheduled to be launched in South Korea within this year.
