Opening of Korea-UK Green Week
Raising Awareness on Sustainability in the K-pop Industry
YG Entertainment announced on the 6th that it successfully concluded the 'Sustainable K-pop Ideathon' co-hosted with the British Embassy in Korea.
The event was held on the 4th at the multipurpose hall on the 8th floor of Seoul City Hall. It was planned as the opening of 'Green Week,' which the British Embassy in Korea introduced for the first time as part of strengthening Korea-UK cooperation to address the climate crisis, in accordance with the Downing Street Accord.
The theme of the ideathon was 'Creative ideas to make a better world through the K-pop industry.' YG explained that participants engaged in passionate discussions from various perspectives on raising awareness about the sustainability of the K-pop industry and ways to bring about positive change.
YG and the British Embassy in Korea have cooperated to enhance sustainability. YG's group BLACKPINK served as ambassadors during the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in 2021 and received the Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) from King Charles III of the United Kingdom.
Colin Crooks, the British Ambassador to Korea, said, "Green Week is an event where the UK and Korea cooperate for the planet in response to the shared challenge of climate change. I am very pleased to collaborate once again with YG on this important task at the Sustainable K-pop Ideathon." He added, "Empowering the younger generation is a crucial part of global climate action, so this event was very meaningful as it showcased the creativity and passion of young Korean participants."
About 70 university students who expressed their interest through prior notice, along with the British Ambassador to Korea and YG officials, attended the event.
'Green Week' is an event held for the first time this year by the British Embassy in Korea. Policy makers, academia, businesses, influencers, and students from Korea and the UK participate in the event, which runs until the 8th, focusing on 'eco-friendly' themes such as renewable energy, nuclear power, electric vehicles, sustainable business practices, and biodiversity conservation.
