70-Year-Old Man Wearing Electronic Ankle Bracelet for Stalking His Divorced Ex-Wife

A man in his 70s who stalked his divorced ex-wife demanding living expenses was ordered to wear an electronic monitoring device (electronic anklet) during the police investigation stage.

The Sosa Police Station in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, announced on the 6th that Mr. A (74, male) was booked without detention on charges of violating the Act on the Punishment of Stalking Crimes.

Mr. A is suspected of stalking his ex-wife Ms. B, who lives in Bucheon, last month. Since their divorce in 2016, Mr. A continuously contacted Ms. B demanding living expenses and hospital fees, and was also found to have sent threatening text messages.

Previously, in October last year, Mr. A committed a similar stalking offense and was booked without detention and sent to the prosecution. The police, fearing that Mr. A might commit stalking again, applied to the court for an order to attach an electronic anklet during the investigation stage, which was recently approved.

Following the 'Seoul Sindang Station Murder' case in 2022, amendments to the stalking punishment law were discussed, and since January, courts can order stalking suspects to wear electronic anklets for up to nine months even before sentencing.

This is the first case in the jurisdiction of the Southern Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency where an electronic anklet was attached to a stalking suspect during a police investigation.
