The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) announced on the 6th that it will publish and distribute the '2023 Standard Patent Strategy Map Report,' which will serve as a guide for securing standard patents in next-generation mobile communication technology 6G and Urban Air Mobility (UAM) sectors.
6G is recognized as the next-generation mobile communication technology with transmission speeds 50 times faster than 5G and latency reduced to one-tenth. This technology enables service even at an altitude of 10 km above ground through low-earth orbit satellites, making it possible to provide advanced converged services across various industries such as real-time remote surgery, fully autonomous vehicles, air taxis, and the metaverse once commercialized.
UAM is also a rapidly emerging technology in the industry. The core of UAM is an air traffic system equipped with aircraft capable of vertical takeoff and landing to transport people or cargo in urban airspace. In this technology field, global companies such as Boeing, Airbus, and Hyundai Motor Company are currently competing to lead the UAM market. It is estimated that the UAM market size will reach 731 trillion KRW by 2040.

The report was published to guide the research and development (R&D) directions and project planning that the public and private sectors should pursue to secure a leading position in the 6G and UAM technologies, which are recognized as core industries that will transform future society.
The report includes ▲ domestic and international patent trends ▲ methods for deriving promising technologies ▲ the final derived promising technologies ▲ and standard patent acquisition strategies for each promising technology related to 6G and UAM technologies.
KIPO selects two fields annually and provides strategic analysis results of patent big data and standard information by field. The purpose is to derive promising technologies from the perspective of securing standard patents and to provide standard patent acquisition strategies for each promising technology to the public and private sectors.
In particular, this year’s report was prepared through reviews by research management agencies of the Ministry of Science and ICT (6G) and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (UAM), as well as experts from industry, academia, and research institutes, reflecting highly reliable and up-to-date industry trends, which is expected to increase its usefulness.
The report can be downloaded from the Standard Patent Portal website of the Korea Institute of Patent Strategy and Development.
Jokseong Ho, Director of the Industrial Property Policy Bureau at KIPO, said, “The 6G and UAM sectors are future core industries that will innovatively change our lives, and securing market leadership through the preemption of standard patents is essential. As the government agency in charge of intellectual property, KIPO will continue to strive to strengthen the national competitiveness in standard patents.”
