Geumcheon-gu CCTV Control Officer's Role in On-Site Arrest of Sexual Harassment Suspect

Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that a control operator at the U Integrated Operation Center played a decisive role in apprehending a suspect of sexual assault through intensive CCTV monitoring.

At around 00:05 on February 25, a man approached a woman who was alone at a village bus stop within Geumcheon-gu.

The control operator, suspicious of the man lingering around the woman, closely monitored him, secured evidence footage, and promptly reported to the police. The man was immediately investigated by the police who arrived on the scene and was confirmed to have committed sexual assault, leading to his arrest in flagrante delicto.

Although it was a case that occurred outdoors late at night, making it potentially difficult to prove the charges, the suspect was apprehended thanks to the proactive response of the control operator.

The Geumcheon Police Station (Chief Lee Jong-seo) awarded a commendation for outstanding service in apprehending the sexual assault suspect to the control operator on February 29.

The same control operator had previously identified a theft suspect through CCTV monitoring on November 28 last year and relayed the suspect’s movements to the police, receiving a commendation from the Chief of Geumcheon Police Station.

The Geumcheon-gu U Integrated Operation Center operates 3,170 multipurpose CCTVs installed at 936 locations including school zones, parks, and high-crime areas. Thirteen control operators and four police officers dispatched from Geumcheon Police Station are stationed 24/7, 365 days a year, to promptly respond to various incidents and accidents occurring in the area.

A Geumcheon-gu official stated, “Last year as well, the efforts of the control operators helped detect and apprehend more than 10 crimes, and they are also closely responding to disasters, accidents, and emergency situations.”

Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “We plan to actively expand CCTV installations and enhance intelligent CCTV systems to strengthen crime prevention and disaster response systems. We will continue to do our best to create a safe city Geumcheon through thorough monitoring and organic cooperation with related agencies.”
