Daegu City announced on the 5th that it has selected six universities?Kyungpook National University, Keimyung University, Daegu National University of Education, Keimyung Culture University, Daegu Technical University, and Daegu Science University?to officially launch the "2024 One-Thousand-Won Breakfast Support Project" starting from the new semester.
The "One-Thousand-Won Breakfast Support Project" is an initiative aimed at providing breakfast to university students, who have a high rate of skipping breakfast (59% as of 2022), for 1,000 won. The project promotes the formation of healthy eating habits by encouraging breakfast consumption and aims to boost rice consumption.
Daegu City plans to significantly expand the related budget and the number of beneficiaries this year. For breakfast costs, the government will support 2,000 won, Daegu City 1,000 won, and universities will contribute between 500 won and 2,000 won each, while students only need to pay 1,000 won.
The budget has been doubled from the previous year to 70 million won, and the number of eligible students has increased from 35,000 last year to 91,000 this year to carry out the project.
Ahn Jung-gon, Director of the Economic Bureau of Daegu City, visited Kyungpook National University and had breakfast with the students, saying, "I am glad that students can start a healthy day with a meal without any burden," and added, "We will continue to expand the One-Thousand-Won Breakfast Support Project to universities in the region so that many students can benefit."
