As environmental issues have become a global concern, the use of insects for processing organic waste and their subsequent processing and utilization has attracted attention. Foodiworm signed a non-disclosure agreement on February 6th in Tokyo, Japan, with a Japanese waste disposal company regarding large-scale insect breeding equipment and processing facilities.
The Japanese waste disposal company reviewed various technologies related to large-scale insect breeding equipment and selected Foodiworm's FoodiCube as the final technology to be applied. According to a Foodiworm official, "Discussions are currently ongoing, and a site inspection is scheduled for March at Foodiworm's production facility."
Foodiworm's large-scale insect breeding device, FoodiCube, uses a multi-level conveyor belt to automatically breed black soldier fly larvae, which feed on organic waste, and ultimately produces frass (used as high-quality fertilizer), larvae (from which protein, fat, chitin, and chitosan are extracted for use as feed and various raw materials), and other products. This is an eco-friendly upcycling technology that efficiently processes organic waste.
In particular, Foodiworm, which led the establishment of insect AI technology through government projects, is also focusing on the development of IoT and ICT technologies to advance insect smart farms.
In this regard, the official stated, "In addition to Japan, there are many inquiries from companies engaged in black soldier fly or eco-friendly businesses in other countries, and several companies are also scheduled to visit Korea."
