Democratic Party Nominates Lee Seong-yoon for Jeonju-eul... 3-Way Contest with Ruling Party's Jeong Un-cheon and Progressive Kang Seong-hee (Comprehensive)

Seongyun Lee Advances to Main Round Without Runoff by Winning Majority Vote

The Democratic Party of Korea confirmed Lee Seong-yoon, a research fellow at the Judicial Research and Training Institute, as the candidate for the Jeonju-eul district in North Jeolla Province for the general election on the 4th.

The Democratic Party's Election Management Committee announced the results of the nomination primary at the party headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, on the 4th. Lee secured a majority of votes in a five-way primary against proportional representative lawmaker Yang Kyung-sook, lawyer Ko Jong-yoon, lawyer Lee Deok-chun, and Choi Hyung-jae, vice chairman of the Democratic Party's Policy Committee, thus advancing directly to the main election.

Lee was recently dismissed for violating the prosecutorial ethics code, following his actions such as criticizing the "Yoon Seok-yeol faction" at the book launch event of former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk. He is currently preparing an administrative lawsuit to cancel the dismissal. Although dismissal restricts legal activities for three years, it does not limit political activities, so there is no issue with his candidacy.

Lee, a junior alumnus of Kyung Hee University Law School to former President Moon Jae-in and considered a leading pro-Moon (pro-Moon Jae-in) figure within the prosecution, will face off in the main election against Jeong Un-cheon of the People Power Party and Kang Seong-hee of the Progressive Party, the incumbent in the district.

Honam is not a region where the Democratic Party and the Progressive Party have agreed to unify candidates, but unification is still possible depending on public opinion trends.

In Goyang-byeong, Gyeonggi Province, Lee Ki-heon, former civil affairs secretary at the Blue House under the Moon Jae-in administration, won the runoff against incumbent lawmaker Hong Jeong-min and will compete against Kim Jong-hyuk, former editor-in-chief of JoongAng Ilbo and the People Power Party candidate.

In Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do, the district of Park Wan-joo who left the party, candidate Lee Jae-gwan won the three-way primary against Lee Gui-hee and Kim Young-soo and was selected as the candidate.

Meanwhile, on the same day, the Strategic Nomination Management Committee strategically nominated Park Kyung-mi, former secretary to the Speaker of the National Assembly, for Gangnam-byeong in Seoul.
