In the U.S. Republican presidential primary, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley secured her first victory against former President Donald Trump on the 3rd (local time).
According to AP News and others, Haley won 62.9% of the vote in the Washington DC primary held from the 1st until 7 p.m. on the same day, defeating former President Trump, who received 33.2%.
This marks Haley's first win against former President Trump. In the previous eight primaries, Trump had won consecutively.
Washington DC is considered one of the progressive-leaning areas with a strong Democratic supporter base in the U.S. In the 2020 presidential election, President Joe Biden secured 92% of the vote there. Although Washington DC has a population of about 700,000, as of January 31, there are only about 23,000 registered Republicans.
However, Haley's victory is expected to have little impact on the overall primary race. Washington DC is allocated only 19 delegates out of the total 2,429 Republican delegates. According to polling data, foreign media analysts expect former President Trump to win nearly all upcoming primaries.
Meanwhile, in an interview with NBC on the same day, when asked if she would support former President Trump, Haley said, "To say support is to say defeat," adding, "I don't think that way."
