Feeding Activity in Nonseo, Onyang-eup, Ulju-gun Since the 7th
Bird Expert: "Stopped by While Migrating North After Wintering in Japan"
The "Goni" was discovered for the first time in Ulsan. This bird attracts attention because it is different from the Whooper Swan, which visits Korea as a winter guest at the Nakdong River estuary and Taehwa River.
On the 4th, Ulsan City announced that two individuals of the "Goni," a natural monument and a Class I endangered wild species, were found in the fields of Onyang-eup, Ulju-gun, Ulsan.
On February 7, the Goni that came to the fields of Onyang-eup, Ulju-gun, was first confirmed through a photo taken by Lee Jae-ho (Beomseo-eup, Ulju-gun), a member of Jjaekjjaek Rest Area, a young citizen bird monitoring group led by Hong Seung-min.
Subsequent continuous observations by the monitoring group confirmed that the Goni was feeding while moving between Onsan-eup and Onyang-eup fields.
This fact was reported to Ulsan City at the end of last month, and photographer Yoon Ki-deuk immediately accompanied the team to verify the site and record it on video.
The next day, two Goni individuals were observed feeding together with Great Egrets at another location.
Ornithologist Dr. Kim Seong-su explained, "The Whooper Swan visits the Taehwa River every year, but this is the first confirmed sighting of the Goni. It seems that the Goni chose the Onyang fields, which are rich in food and safe, to build up strength before a long journey from Japan or the south to the north."
The "Goni" is a natural monument and is known as a rare winter bird with about 100 individuals wintering domestically. The Ministry of Environment designated it as a Class I endangered wild species in 2022 for protection.
The Goni is entirely white with a black tip on its beak, and the area under its eyes is yellow, small, and rounded, whereas the Whooper Swan (Class II endangered wild species) has a yellow patch that extends downward.
The Goni’s English name is Tundra Swan, which breeds in northern Eurasia, Alaska, and Canada, and winters in Korea, Japan, and western Europe.
