The number of Starbucks stores in South Korea has surpassed 1,900. It is highly likely to exceed 2,000 by the first half of next year.

At the end of last year, the number of Starbucks stores in South Korea was 1,893, ranking fourth in the world after the United States, China, and Japan, but it has increased by 8 stores in just two months.

Starbucks opened its first store in front of Ewha Womans University in 1999, surpassed 500 stores in 2013, and reached 1,000 stores in 2016. Even after the outbreak of COVID-19, the number exceeded 1,500 in 2020.

By region, 60% (1,145 stores) of Starbucks stores are concentrated in the Seoul metropolitan area. In particular, Seoul has 610 stores, accounting for 32% of the total. Seoul is considered one of the cities with the most Starbucks stores worldwide.

The city with the second highest number of Starbucks stores in South Korea after Seoul is Busan, with a population of 3.29 million and 140 stores. Following are Daegu with 89 stores, Incheon with 76, Daejeon with 65, and Gwangju with 63.

By province, Gyeonggi-do, with a population of 13.63 million, has the most stores at 459. Following Gyeonggi-do are Gyeongnam with 75 stores, Gyeongbuk with 60, and Chungnam with 47. Jeju-do, which has a population of only 680,000 but attracts many tourists, has 30 stores, similar to Jeonnam with a population of 1.8 million and 32 stores.

Although one-third of all Starbucks stores nationwide are concentrated in Seoul, there is a large disparity in the number of stores among districts within Seoul. The number of stores in the district with the most stores is more than 10 times that of the district with the fewest. Gangnam-gu leads with 90 stores. It is followed by Jung-gu with 53, Seocho-gu with 48, Yeongdeungpo-gu with 42, and Jongno-gu with 40. Songpa-gu and Mapo-gu each have 36 stores. Many districts have between 10 and 20 stores, but Gangbuk-gu, Dobong-gu, and Jungnang-gu each have fewer than 10 stores.
