"Regulatory Blind Spots... Need to Establish Appropriate Blocking Methods"
Ahead of the Qatar Asian Cup semifinals, it has been pointed out that fake news about Lee Kang-in, the central figure in the so-called 'Table Tennis Gate' dispute within the South Korean national football team, continues to spread on YouTube. The total revenue from these videos is estimated to reach as much as 700 million KRW.
On the 3rd, AI company 'Piler', which analyzes the context of video content, announced, "From the 14th to the 27th of last month, since the Lee Kang-in issue became known, a total of 361 videos detected as related fake news content were identified, of which 195 were confirmed and had their advertisements blocked."
Among these, a YouTube channel with about 60,000 subscribers posted a video titled "Lee Kang-in's 28 billion KRW contract termination, PSG Seoul Store fully suspended confirmed!" on the 19th, which surpassed 500,000 views.
In the video, a reporter stated, "The PSG club owner made a shocking decision. He ordered that the fallen image of Lee Kang-in should no longer allow him to play in the first team. PSG is also deliberating on Lee Kang-in's future," but this was false information with no verifiable source or basis.
The channel that uploaded the video created 21 football-related video contents by the 28th of last month, accumulating about 3.13 million views and generating advertising revenue. Piler stated, "According to the YouTube revenue estimation calculator, this channel is estimated to have earned between 14 million KRW and 32 million KRW in profit over the past 30 days."
Other videos mostly feature sensational titles and images such as "Lee Kang-in's third-tier rebellion exposed, Lee Kang-in family company on the brink of disintegration," "Witnessed Lee Kang-in's intentional assault in front of my eyes: Klinsmann, Son Heung-min assault incident fully exposed, leaked video of Lee Kang-in breaking Son Heung-min's hand," "Now Lee Kang-in's jersey doesn't sell," and "PSG release imminent, national team career over."
Piler analyzed, "The total views of these videos reach 69,408,099, and based on this, it is estimated that about 700 million KRW in revenue has been generated."
Piler explained, "Cases of continuously producing and distributing sensational issues or fake news on overseas platforms, which are regulatory blind spots, are increasing, but due to the nature of YouTube advertising, it is impossible for advertisers to check individually where their ads are displayed."
They added, "It is necessary to utilize AI ad tech solutions to block inappropriate ad exposure and the support structure for fake news creators."
