Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Seongheon) held the event "Seodaemun, 1919 The Shout of That Day" around Seodaemun Independence Park on March 1 and 2 to commemorate the 105th anniversary of the March 1st Movement.
On the 1st, at a special stage inside the Seodaemun Prison History Hall, the March 1st Independence Declaration was read aloud followed by three cheers of "Manse," and a magnificent parade of citizens shouting "Manse" took place along a roughly 350-meter route to Independence Gate.
At Independence Park, the first raising ceremony of a large Taegukgi flag measuring 5.4 meters wide and 3.6 meters tall was held. To facilitate this, the district installed a new 25-meter-high flagpole. The ceremony was enhanced by the participation of the 56th Division Military Band of the Capital Defense Command.
At the Assembly Hall of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea Memorial Hall, a March 1st commemorative concert was held to honor the noble sacrifices of patriotic ancestors and to reflect on the values of freedom and peace, moving the audience deeply.
On the 2nd, an academic symposium titled "The Historic Significance and Development Plans of the Former Seodaemun Prison Area" was held at the same Assembly Hall, exploring development directions for the historical and cultural belt connecting Independence Gate, Seodaemun Prison History Hall, and the Provisional Government Memorial Hall.
On both the 1st and 2nd, various experiential programs for families were offered through on-site registration, attracting many citizens who wished to spend the March 1st holiday meaningfully.
Lee Seongheon, Mayor of Seodaemun-gu, said, "I hope the '1919 The Shout of That Day' event served as an opportunity to recall the patriotic spirit of our ancestors, and through the academic symposium, I hope the value of the historical and cultural belt around Independence Park will be more widely recognized in the future."
