Woori Financial Group Increases Outside Directors from 6 to 7... Recommends 2 New Female Candidates

Woori Financial Group announced on the 28th that it held a Nomination Committee meeting and recommended Professor Park Sun-young of Dongguk University’s Department of Economics and Professor Lee Eun-joo of Seoul National University’s Department of Communication as new outside director candidates.


Replacing former outside director Song Soo-young, who retired upon the expiration of her term, Woori Financial has newly appointed two female outside directors, thereby increasing the board from six to seven members and expanding gender diversity.

Candidate Lee Eun-joo, born in 1972, graduated from Seoul National University’s Department of Journalism (now Department of Communication) and earned a Ph.D. in Communication from Stanford University. After serving as a professor at the University of California in the United States in 2001, she has been a professor at Seoul National University’s Department of Communication since 2008.


Lee is currently serving as a director of the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies, head of the Center for AI Reliability, and director of the Social Value Research Institute, and is recognized as an expert in branding and ESG fields.


New candidate Park Sun-young, born in 1982, graduated from Seoul National University’s Department of Economics, earned a master’s and Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University, and has been a professor at Dongguk University’s Department of Economics since 2020 after serving as a professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at KAIST in 2011 and a research fellow at the Korea Capital Market Institute in 2018.


Park has also served as an advisor and operating committee member for the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Financial Services Commission, and the Bank of Korea, and is regarded as one of the top domestic experts in finance, economics, and digital fields.


A Woori Financial Group official stated, “The increase in outside directors this time considered an appropriate number of directors suitable for the scale of Woori Financial and was decided after sufficient discussion by the board. With this change in the board composition, diversity in professional fields and gender has been further expanded, which is expected to greatly contribute to strengthening Woori Financial’s competitiveness.”
