The council, held in the West Sea Coast Guard Agency’s main conference room, was attended by more than 20 people including officials from the West Sea Agency and Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration, captains and station chiefs from field departments, related organizations such as Mokpo Navigation Control Center, Mokpo Fishing Vessel Safety Operation Bureau, and private marine workers.

The main agenda included △ progress report on the policy of ‘preemptive safety management process before weather deterioration’ △ weather safety and prevention activities experienced on site △ discussion on policy directions to reduce marine accidents in the future △ listening to suggestions and providing responses, conducted freely.

Meanwhile, the joint TF team, launched in October last year, has been leading collaboration by providing storm warning scenarios and safe sea area information from the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration, and setting alert levels (levels 1 to 3) and customized local safety management according to the weather risk levels from the West Sea Agency, thereby reducing the possibility of accidents when fishermen encounter sudden severe weather at their fishing sites.

Kim Inchang, Commissioner of the West Sea Regional Coast Guard Agency, said, “This communication council is a valuable opportunity to listen to the opinions of related organizations and marine workers and to mutually empathize, so we will actively accept the suggestions.” He added, “We will continue to do our best to improve our response capabilities to hazardous weather through steady cooperation with the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration so that the public can engage in safe maritime activities.”
