Unmanned traffic enforcement cameras have been shown to play a significant role in preventing traffic accidents and fatalities.

Effectiveness of Unmanned Traffic Enforcement Cameras 'Significant'... 25% Reduction in Fatal Accidents

The locations for installing unmanned traffic enforcement cameras are selected based on the past three years, focusing on places with a high Accident Risk Index (ARI), considering fatal accidents and other factors, and comprehensively evaluating pedestrian facilities and road conditions.

Since 2020, local governments have concentrated installations in school zones, and as of the end of December last year, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency operates a total of 2,038 unmanned traffic enforcement cameras, including 19 mobile units.

This year, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency plans to install more than 66 additional unmanned traffic enforcement cameras, mainly in locations highly effective for preventing traffic accidents, in cooperation with the Seoul city government. In particular, a budget has been secured for 31 rear enforcement devices capable of monitoring vulnerable two-wheeled vehicles, which is expected to greatly contribute to preventing two-wheeler accidents.

Additionally, to ensure children's pedestrian safety, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency will improve school routes for 20 elementary schools without sidewalks within school zones and invest 5.5 billion KRW in facility improvements at 51 locations with frequent traffic accidents over the past three years. Furthermore, efforts will continue to enhance traffic safety for citizens by improving signal operations at habitual traffic congestion points and installing 58 yellow no-parking zones at major intersections.
