"Lips Age Too"... LG Household & Health Care Reveals 'Grid Wrinkles', Highlights 'Lipserin'

Announcement of Big Data Analysis Results on Lips of 1000 People
Application of Research Achievements in Developing Functional Lip Care Product 'Lipserin'

LG Household & Health Care announced on the 28th the results of a big data analysis on three key changes in lip shape, wrinkles, and tone that appear as people age.

LG Household & Health Care published the results of this lip aging study in the January issue of the renowned international dermatology journal, Skin Research and Technology, under the title “A Large-Scale Image Study on Lip Aging Characteristics of Korean Women.” This is the first study to analyze age-related changes in lip shape and color using deep learning algorithms, and a related patent has also been filed.

The R&I (Research & Innovation) Institute of LG Household & Health Care secured high-resolution images of the lips of 1,000 Korean women aged 20 to 69 for the lip aging analysis. They applied “facial feature point extraction technology” and pattern recognition techniques to these images to analyze changes in lip shape, wrinkles, and tone according to age.

The research team discovered that as lip aging progresses, the lips undergo three major characteristic changes in shape, surface wrinkles, and tone. With age, lips become thinner and flatter, horizontal and vertical wrinkles on the lip surface increase, and the red and yellow tones decrease, resulting in a loss of vitality. Notably, the study newly confirmed that lip wrinkles change from predominantly vertical wrinkles, called “vertical lip wrinkles,” to a pattern where horizontal and vertical wrinkles intersect, known as “lattice (net-like) lip wrinkles,” as aging advances.

LG Household & Health Care actively utilized the lip aging research results in the development of the next-generation functional lip care product, “Lipserin.” Lipserin addresses five major concerns related to lip aging: wrinkles, keratin, gloss, elasticity, and moisture. Since October last year, LG Household & Health Care has launched Lipserin across major brands such as The History of Whoo, O Hui, CNP, belif, and Glint, selling approximately 430,000 units within five months.

Naekyu Kang, CTO (Chief Technology Officer) of LG Household & Health Care, stated, “Over the past six years, LG Household & Health Care has independently built an archive of skin data from 57,000 East Asians, including Koreans. Based on these research results, we will develop specialized anti-aging solutions and provide differentiated customer value.”
