Discussions Since July Last Year... 6G Standardization Meaning Together
"Korea Will Do Its Best to Lead Global Standards"
Ten countries, including South Korea, the United States, and Japan, have announced the 'Joint Declaration of 6G Principles' to advance research, development, and standardization of 6G mobile communication services.
On the 27th (local time) at midnight, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced that the South Korean government will also join the 'Joint Declaration of 6G Principles' (hereinafter referred to as the 6G Principles), which was jointly prepared and announced by ten countries including the United States during the world's largest mobile communication exhibition 'MWC 2024' held in Barcelona, Spain.
The 6G Principles signify the agreement among the ten countries to cooperate based on principles for research and development of 6G wireless communication systems, supporting open, globally interoperable, and secure network connections. The governments of the United States, South Korea, Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Japan, Sweden, and the United Kingdom have been discussing the 6G Principles since July last year.
The 6G Principles state that ▲6G should promote national security protection capabilities through safe and resilient technologies, ▲provide a high level of security in communications by protecting personal information with a systematic approach to cybersecurity, and ▲be developed through open, transparent, and consensus-based decision-making processes, built on global standards that promote sustainability, interoperability, openness, and security.
Additionally, ▲they emphasize using internationally agreed standards to enable seamless interoperability between products from different suppliers in both software and hardware, employing innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), and ▲supporting energy efficiency, equipment recovery and recyclability, social sustainability, and bridging the digital divide by providing enhanced communication coverage.
Furthermore, the declaration includes ▲establishing safe and resilient supply chains and promoting global market competition.
Lee Jong-ho, Minister of Science and ICT, stated, "Based on these '6G Principles,' we will do our best to lead the global 6G standards and continue research and development of 6G technologies that are open and enhance security."
Cho Tae-yul, Minister of Foreign Affairs, said, "In this era where advanced technology determines security and technology-security convergence is key, we will strive to ensure that South Korea plays a leading role in establishing and developing norms in core and emerging technology fields to maintain and strengthen national competitiveness."
