Nong-eochon Gong Jeonbuk Launches 'Groundwater Resource Management Project' in Full Scale

Realizing Abundant Water Welfare... Establishing Measures for Groundwater Utilization

The Jeonbuk Regional Headquarters of the Korea Rural Community Corporation (Head Lee Jeong-moon) announced on the 26th that, in response to the increasing need for systematic conservation management and continuous development and use of groundwater in rural areas, it has launched the 'Groundwater Resource Management Project' to establish an efficient groundwater resource conservation management plan.

According to the Jeonbuk Headquarters, the Groundwater Resource Management Project investigates and analyzes the current status of groundwater in rural water supply zones through rural groundwater management, seawater intrusion surveys, and well condition investigations, and establishes water use and pollution countermeasures. The project is led by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and implemented by the Korea Rural Community Corporation.

The Jeonbuk Headquarters began the project in 2003 and has completed investigations in 36 out of a total of 42 water supply zones as of last year.

This year, the project will be carried out with a budget of 490 million KRW in the Gimbu District (three myeon including Shintaein-eup in Jeongeup-si, and Buryang-myeon in Gimje-si) and the Dongan District (Anseong-myeon in Muju-gun, Donghyang-myeon in Jinan-gun).

The project proposes the establishment of a cyclical water resource system (such as groundwater dams and groundwater recharge) to secure stable water supply in response to climate crises such as groundwater depletion in facility cultivation complexes and localized droughts in island and mountainous areas.

The project outcomes will be provided to local governments and farmers as a rural groundwater management system. It is intended to be used for the prevention of groundwater disasters such as quantity depletion and water pollution in rural areas and for the establishment of conservation management measures.

Head Lee Jeong-moon stated, "The Groundwater Resource Management Project is a very important project for the efficient management of rural groundwater," and added, "Our corporation, the nation's top groundwater specialized institution, will strive even harder to realize abundant water welfare in rural areas based on our professional technology and know-how."
