Shinan-gun, Lifestyle Improvement Association Annual General Meeting... Start of 2024 Slow City Activities

Over 700 Members Play Roles in Transmitting Traditional Culture and Protecting the Environment in Eup and Myeon Areas

On the 26th, Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do held the New Year's General Meeting and Slow City Basic Education at the Agricultural Technology Center auditorium, attended by County Governor Park Woo-ryang, Shinan-gun Council Chairman Kim Hyuk-seong and council members, and over 70 executives of the Shinan-gun Life Improvement Association.

According to the county, at this New Year's General Meeting, they pledged to create a new ‘Slow City Shinan’ along with the 2024 activity plan.

Slow City began in 1999 in Greve in Chianti, Italy, and rather than simply meaning ‘slow,’ it is a movement to revive local culture and economy with the community as the main agent while preserving the unique resources of the region.

Also, Shinan-gun, designated as a Slow City throughout the entire region, plans to actively promote the Slow City movement to improve residents' quality of life and happiness.

To this end, an instructor from the Korea Slow City Headquarters was invited to provide education explaining the basic concepts and promotion directions of Slow City tailored to the residents' level of understanding.

As a side event, in line with the county’s atmosphere leading carbon neutrality efforts, an exhibition was held on eco-friendly packaging methods for agricultural specialty products using discarded holiday wrapping bojagi, which can be easily followed at home and utilizes waste resources, receiving great response from attendees.

The Shinan-gun Life Improvement Association, led by Chairwoman Kim Hyo-jung, has about 700 members who play roles such as passing down traditional culture in towns and townships and acting as environmental guardians.

County Governor Park Woo-ryang said, “Our county was selected as Asia’s first international Slow City member city in 2007 and has been progressing for a long time,” adding, “I hope the Slow City movement will spread to all towns and townships centered on the Life Improvement Association.”
