On the 22nd, Medical Express reported that Professor Johannes Melaku's research team at the Sleep Health Research Institute of Flinders University Medical School in Australia analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted on 14,210 people in the United States, revealing this fact.

The research team analyzed whether there is a correlation between dietary habits and sleep apnea, finding that overall, people who primarily follow a vegetarian diet have a lower risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) compared to those who consume a lot of meat. OSA refers to the condition where a person snores heavily and experiences intermittent breathing interruptions during sleep. The group with the highest intensity of vegetarianism experienced 19% fewer cases of sleep apnea than the group with a lower intensity of vegetarianism.

The research team explained that a healthy vegetarian diet mainly consists of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, tea, and coffee, while an unhealthy vegetarian diet includes refined grains, sugary drinks, sweets, salty foods, and desserts. A meat-based diet centers on meat, animal fats, dairy products, eggs, fish, or seafood. The research team also noted that the effect of vegetarianism was greater in men than in women.

The research team stated that the reason vegetarianism helps prevent sleep apnea is that it blocks inflammation and obesity, which are major risk factors for sleep apnea. Vegetarian diets are rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant components and contain fewer harmful substances, which can affect body fat, inflammation, and even muscle tone. Body fat, inflammation, and muscle tone are all associated with sleep apnea.
