Highest Domestic Aramid Production in 19 Years Increased

On the 22nd, Gumi City in Gyeongbuk announced that Kolon Industries (CEO Kim Young-beom), the first tenant company of Gumi Industrial Complex No. 1, held a completion ceremony for the production line of aramid fiber, known as the dream new material.

In 2005, Kolon Industries succeeded in mass-producing aramid fiber for the first time in Korea, and in 2024, 19 years later, secured a production capacity of 15,310 tons, ranking first in the domestic aramid fiber market.

Aramid is a next-generation new material with strength more than five times that of steel of the same weight and can withstand high temperatures above 500 degrees Celsius. It is called a "super fiber" and is used as a core material in advanced fields such as bulletproof vests, optical cables, electric vehicle tires, and brake pads.

Kolon Industries, a chemical materials specialist company of Kolon, is one of the representative local companies that has established ties with Gumi by setting up the Korea Polyester Gumi Plant in 1971. In 2021, it signed an investment agreement worth 230 billion KRW for the aramid production line within the Gumi plant.

Mayor Kim Jang-ho said, “I sincerely congratulate Kolon Industries on the completion of the aramid production line and thank Vice Chairman Lee Kyu-ho and other company officials for leading large-scale investment in the Gumi Industrial Complex.” He added, “I hope that the aramid fiber produced in Gumi will create significant demand in the global market, and we will spare no support to enable Gumi to serve as a production hub for Kolon Industries’ aramid fiber.”
