Research on Trap MRO Business Strategy
"Mutual Trust-Based Civil-Military Cooperation Essential"
Hanwha Ocean has teamed up with the Navy Association to strengthen its capabilities in ship MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) operations.
Hanwha Ocean announced that on the 21st, it held a final presentation meeting on the ship MRO business research results with the Navy Association. Attendees included Lee Yong-wook, Head of Hanwha Ocean’s Special Ship Business Division, and Kim Pan-gyu, Senior Vice Chairman of the Navy Association.
Previously, in October last year, Hanwha Ocean commissioned the Navy Association to conduct a study on ‘Hanwha Ocean’s ship MRO business promotion strategy and plans,’ and on this day, the Navy Association presented the research findings.
At the presentation, the Navy Association covered ▲the status of ship MRO by major foreign countries and analysis of performing companies ▲the current status of the Korean Navy’s maintenance units and analysis of maintenance tasks ▲development plans for outsourced maintenance utilizing private companies.
Based on its direct experience operating surface ships, the Navy Association stated, "Due to changes in population structure leading to a reduction in personnel and the operation of advanced performance ships, expanding civil-military cooperation in the MRO sector will inevitably be necessary in the future."

Hanwha Ocean and the Navy Association reached a consensus that mutual trust is essential in the process of expanding civil-military cooperation. The fundamental principle of the Defense Acquisition Program Act also stipulates ‘to enhance the transparency, expertise, and efficiency of defense projects to strengthen the competitiveness of the defense industry, thereby establishing a self-reliant defense posture and expanding economic growth potential.’
Through this research result, Hanwha Ocean reaffirmed that strengthening MRO business capabilities is essential for the continuous maintenance of the Republic of Korea Navy’s combat power and for enhancing defense industry competitiveness through improved shipbuilding technology.
Hanwha Ocean is the only company with shipbuilding achievements across all lineups operated by our navy, including destroyers, frigates, and submarines.
Hanwha Ocean stated, "We have secured unparalleled technological capabilities in the ship sector," adding, "By establishing and operating a specialized MRO organization last year, we are responding to changes in the ship MRO environment, where military-centered MRO business is expanding into the civilian sector."
