Gangseo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jin Gyo-hoon) announced on the 21st that it will invest 2.2 billion KRW by 2025 to completely replace security lights and streetlights with eco-friendly LED lighting.
LED lighting reduces power consumption by 40% compared to traditional lighting using sodium and metal halide sources, and its high energy efficiency also lowers carbon emissions. The higher illuminance makes it easier to identify objects, helping to prevent crime. So far, the district has steadily replaced security lights and streetlights with LEDs, raising the LED distribution rate to 91.1% for security lights and 90.9% for streetlights.
Additionally, this year, 796 security lights and 500 streetlights will be replaced, and next year, 372 streetlights will be replaced to achieve a 100% LED distribution rate. This year, security lights in Banghwa-dong, Balsan-dong, and Hwagok-dong, as well as streetlights on Gonghang-daero, Heojun-ro, Hwagok-ro, and Yangcheon-ro will be replaced. Next year, streetlight replacements will take place on Magokdong-ro, Magokseo-ro, Magokjungang-ro, and Gangseo-ro.
The replacements will use products with significantly improved lighting modules and shielding panels to reduce the discomfort of residents who have trouble sleeping due to security light glare and to brighten alleyways.
Furthermore, some alleyways will be equipped with smart security lights incorporating Internet of Things (IoT) technology, which detect movement through sensors and automatically brighten the lights, enhancing crime prevention effects.
Mayor Jin Gyo-hoon said, “We are promoting the distribution of eco-friendly LEDs to prevent crime in vulnerable areas, which has recently become a major issue, and to ensure safe walking environments for socially vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children.” He added, “We will create a safe and secure city in Gangseo where everyone can walk comfortably by establishing a safe walking environment.”
