Par 5, Hole 2 Tee Box Moved 10 Yards Back
Course Adjusted Annually for Spectator Convenience
Augusta National Golf Club (hereinafter Augusta National), which hosts the "Masters Tournament," has once again made changes to the course this year.
On the 20th (local time), Augusta National announced in a course guide distributed to the media in advance that "the tee box on the 2nd hole (par 5) has been moved back 10 yards." The length of the 2nd hole, which was 575 yards until last year, has been extended to 585 yards. The 2nd hole is the longest hole at Augusta but is not very difficult. Until last year, it was the easiest hole, but experts predict it will become the second easiest hole this year. The easiest hole to attack is expected to be the 13th hole (par 5).
Regarding the course changes, Augusta National explained, "The main purpose is to secure sightlines so that spectators can view as many hole greens as possible from one location." Augusta National has made slight changes to the course every year. Although it is a course that values tradition the most, it is generally regarded as proactive in course renovations.
After the tournament ends, they analyze players' strategies and changes in driving distance, and then make changes to the course such as moving or adding teeing grounds and transplanting trees. Last year, Augusta National extended the length of the 13th hole by as much as 35 yards, raised the tee box by about 7 meters, and modified some par 3 holes for spectator convenience. In 2022, they also changed the 11th, 15th, and 18th holes.
