Eight directors of daycare centers in Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City recently held a meeting on low birthrate measures with Jo In-cheol, the Democratic Party preliminary candidate for Seo-gu (Gap), and expressed their support.
At the meeting with candidate Jo, eight directors including Ki Seong-min of Yeonggyeong Daycare Center voiced difficulties in operations due to the lack of wage support for home daycare centers. They also stated that sufficient support for daycare centers must be provided even after the implementation of the integrated childcare system.
They also suggested that job and housing support should be provided to young people of marriageable age as a measure against low birthrates.
They emphasized, “The housing currently provided to newlyweds is too small, so they are reluctant to have children,” and added, “Housing support of sufficient size to live with children must be provided.”
Candidate Jo said, “Only by standing on the side of children can we lead policies in the best direction for them,” and proposed a birth basic income where the state takes responsibility for a child's life from the moment of birth.
